Race: Dwarves
Lifespan: 350-400 years
Physical Descriptions: Dwarves are short and burly, measured around 3'4" to 4'5" tall and weigh in at about 200 to 300 lbs each. The men are more muscular by design but the women are often fatter and rounder than the men.
Both she and he dwarves grow an abundance of body hair, more so than the other races. Every male grows hair all over his body: legs, arms, chest, groin, stomach, back, buttocks, face and head. Rumor has it however that most he-dwarves grow hair everywhere except the tops of their heads which often become bald with age.
The females also grow a excess of hair over their bodies but it is usually lighter in texture and color than a man's and often, it does not grow on their chests, backs or buttocks but many grow light beards and mustaches. All dwarves, however, prefer to braid or plait their hair in all places on their body. Beards and Head hair is often also adorned with beads, bangles or feathers.
Before puberty, which hits around 15 years of age for either gender, a young dwarf will resemble a hobbit and will sometimes be confused with one by travelers, those who know about hobbits anyway. Males mature fully at 25 and females mature around 20.
The popular clothing of civilian dwarves consists of thick leathers and rough fabrics in dark colors for men and lighter leathers and even satins for the women. Workers and miners prefer to don heavier leathers and keep away from jewelry and the likes. Warriors often wear chainmail armors of mithril with heavy plating over it.
Social: Dwarves are unrefined, rough people who don't have an issue stating their mind to anyone. They love their meat and ales and adore shiny things, much like the dragons do. Addditonally, the dwarves have great pride both in self achievement and racially. To them, there is no greater thing to be than a dwarf. Even elves are no where near their equals despite what elves say.
The dwarven people live underground in deep caves and mines. Their cities are grand, shimmering with gold, mithril and gems. The ceilings are hundreds of feet high and most cities expand hundreds of miles both from end to end and downward, deeper into the ground. The underground rivers and lakes supply them with fresh water and special mosses and plants that grow in the dark caves bring food for both them and the ground dwelling creatures they hunt.
Classes are less important in dwarven society. While there is always the nobility and royalty, most of the common people are miners, warriors or both like all other dwarves. There are some positions of skill however. Craftsman and smiths are probably the closest thing to high class as there is (under royalty and nobility of course). Those with a superior skill in working metals and leathers are seen as grand dwarves. They bring glory to the dwarven people.
Estimated Population: 184,000 individuals.
Standing Army: Yes. They are dangerous in their own rights with gear of a higher quality than most other armies. Their weakness is their lack of cavalry. But one unique thing is the minotaurs who fight with them.
They are large and imposing and able to counteract most other types of cavalry. But they have no siege weapons or air mounted troops. Their spellcasters are not particularly powerful or plentiful. But what they do have is knowledge of the mountains and many secret places to hide where their enemies can not find them.
And among the troops is a particularly dangerous bunch known as the Aetherial Followers. A sect of dwarven warriors who pride themselves in one thing, mage slaying. They are anti-spellcaster troops that have a wide range of abilities that serve to defeat those who would sling a spell before swinging a sword. They can negate any magikal spells from taking place within a specified area, which only gets larger as you meet more powerful within the group. As well as being able to drain a spellcaster of all of their magikal energies with a single, landed, attack. And, although it is much more rare, some have even been able to completely debilitate entire legions of spellcasters on their own.
Size: Medium. Estimated around 15,500.
